_Laerdal Inflate-A-Shield™, revolutionizes CPR barriers by creating a whole new type of device. Combining the superior protection of a full mask and the portability of a thin shield, the single-use Inflate-a-Shield CPR barrier is designed to inflate with one breath. The inflated cuff provides an effective seal against the patient’s face directing all blown air into the lungs while a side port designed into the PVC valve allows a revived patient‘s exhaled air to escape. It also creates a psychological benefit by providing more distance between the patient and rescuer.
A key task was the design and engineering of the mouthpiece and inflation valve. Rigid PVC was selected so it could be dialectically assembled with the inflatable PVC cuff. The mouthpiece features a one-way valve with a 3M™ Filtrete™ hydrophobic filter to reduce airborne bacteria and viruses.
Multiple cuff and valve mouthpiece shapes were explored along with ideas for carrying pouches: a pendant for lifeguards worn around-the-neck, a keychain pouch, and a case for storing in auto glove boxes.
The Museum of Modern Art selected the Inflate-A-Shield™ for inclusion in its 2005 exhibition SAFE: Design Takes On Risk.
