_Chicco’s NextFit convertible car seat, on sale since March of 2013, is exceeding sales expectaions at Babies-R-Us because of design innovations in user convenience, safety features, easy to follow set-up graphics, great appearance and a comfy cocoon-like environment for children. The Chicco NextFit car seat design was initiated by Chicco while Machineart refined the physical form and the design of the instructional and safety related graphics. The goal was to develop the easiest convertible car seat to install accurately and securely in a wide range of vehicles. Graphically communicating how to do so clearly to parents was one design challenge.
Most car seats are covered with instruction, warning and regulatory labels that are difficult to read, look haphazardly applied, and destroy any design integrity the seat itself may have. Machineart designed instruction panels shaped to correspond to the contours of the seat shell, used color coding to distinguish between forward facing and rearward facing installations, and used large illustrations to better orient the user. The NextFit is designed to accommodate children from 5-40 lbs in the rear-facing mode, and from 22-65 lbs in the forward-facing mode. A 9-position Leveling System provides recline options to accommodate a wide range of vehicles, and two bubble levels accurately indicate correct seat angle in both rear-facing and forward-facing positions. After a child grows and is ready to move to a forward-facing position, an integrated slide path that’s color-coded makes it easy to re-position the LATCH strap without re-threading. Other features include a removable infant insert for smaller babies, 6 position headrest, machine-washable seat pad, and removable cup holder for use on either side of the seat.
Brisk sales indicate a successful design – an essential combination of safety, comfort, intuitive set-up, convenience features, and style.
